North Technical High School Culinary Arts students were awarded 1st place for the third year in a row at the annual Culinary Cook-Off competition at Forest Park Community College on Friday, April 20th. This is the 11th year of the competition, is co-sponsored by Explore St. Louis.
Similar to the format of competition based programs like “Iron Chef”, high school competitors have two hours to both develop recipes for and produce an appetizer, salad, and entree. Jada Addison and fellow team members Kristal Davis, Tramell Le`Flore, Shannon Robinson, and Shawne Smith worked together to earn the Levy Cup. Their winning meal included a salad with goat cheese, fresh berries, and pancetta, gougères stuffed with pork tenderloin, and a sweet and sour lemon salmon served with roasted potatoes and asparagus.
Program instructor Wayne Gerler was proud of his team’s performance. Students were required to audition to be on the team and the final members were announced just two days prior to the competition. “We have a lot of talented students this year,” said Gerler, referencing the difficulty in making his final selections. “I can’t wait to see what the future brings for these students,” he said, “I hope to watch them on Food Network someday!”
St Louis Post Dispatch Food critic Daniel Newan, who also judged the event, shared a story about the cook-off in this weekend’s Lifestyles section, here: http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/food-and-cooking/north-tech-outcooks-the-competition—-again/article_248b3f6c-2a89-518a-9365-8890ed7f8155.html.
