Morris "Powers Up" Students During Visit to Electrical Program

Morris “Powers Up” Students During Visit to Electrical Program

Malik Morris, a 2018 graduate of North Tech’s Electrical Trades program, is choosing to use his volunteer hours giving back to his alma mater.

Morris is employed by Power Up, the largest minority-owned, full-service electrical contractor in the St. Louis region. Power Up is a sponsor of the Construction Career Development Initiative which works with North Tech to connect young people to the many opportunities in the design and construction industry. During a CCDI job fair in his senior year, Morris interviewed and offered a position with the company which began in July 2018.

As part of his employment, Morris was asked to donate volunteer time and chose to spend it mentoring students in his former Tech program. His instructor, Rich Fenoglio, appreciated Morris’ dedication to the program but wasn’t surprised. “Malik is a very respectful young man,” he said, “and that really impressed employers.” Morris attended North Tech as a full-day student and also played Basketball for the North Tech Eagles.

Morris is heading to work at St. Louis Public Schools to begin installation work for Power Up. Starting wages for Morris are $15 an hour as a paid apprentice along with benefits and training. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, he will be a journeyman and potentially earn $50,000 to $60,000 a year (averages according to data from from 7/2018). As the need for skilled trade professionals in construction continues to grow, graduates like Morris will qualify for multiple jobs and wage increases throughout their careers.

North Tech’s partnership with CCDI has provided our students with countless opportunities and we greatly appreciate Power Up’s commitment to the program and North Tech. Students like Morris are enjoying careers that not only bring individual success but also inspire them to mentor and inspire others.
