Small Students Meet Big Fashion
What happens when two of North Tech’s programs team up to form an alliance? Only the cutest fashion show ever!
Collaborations between different programs are not unusual at North Tech and they are often the brainchild of our administrators. Fashion Design instructor, Mr. Shan Oliver, said, “Mr. Edson has been asking for Fashion Design to team up with the Early Childhood program to do a show since the first day I arrived at North Tech.” In fact, this is not the first time for the classes to work together, but it is the first Valentine’s Day partnership.
The students began making the clothing in January, so they only had a month to perfect their work. All of Mr. Oliver’s Fashion Design students made a garment for the children, but like most design competitions, only a dozen looks made it to the runway.
Part of the preparation for the fashion show was done at the beginning of the semester. “The Early Childhood babies came to our classroom and each of my students was assigned a child. They had to take the preschoolers’ measurements and converse with them to get a feel for the child’s energy. As you can see by the pictures, the designers did a fantastic job of bringing out the personalities of the children,” said Oliver.
Despite having a few problems with garments being either too big or too small and some minor adjustments having to be made, Oliver said, “The students absolutely love working with the smaller kids! This experience is always exciting, and the staff and students of the Early Childcare program are always a joy to work with!”
Your next opportunity to see North Tech’s talented Fashion Design students in action will be on May 9th for the annual Senior Fashion Show during which their models will walk a set built by our equally talented Carpentry students. Come see what all of the hype is about!
