North Tech Construction Students Take On Competition in a Box

North Tech Construction Students Take On Competition in a Box

On Friday, April 12, students from North and South Tech Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis (HBA) student chapters traveled to Payne Family Homes to compete in “Competition in a Box,” a one-day event designed to introduce students to the challenging tasks of blueprint reading in project management. The competition is designed in a “trivia” format and involves complex questions about blueprints and construction methods.

North Tech brought 2 teams of competitors, placing fourth and fifth: Eonna Anderson, Travis Bennett, and Myron Lockett comprised Team 1 and Team 2 included Darnell Jamison, Rodnisha Brooks and TiMyra Granger. South Tech brought a single team who placed third in the competition: Alex Jacobi, Joe Lynch, and Jordan Ware. Our teams found the work challenging and informative.

North Tech senior carpentry student Anderson stated during a mid-contest check-in, “I feel good about how we’ve been doing on the test. It’s really hard and there’s some of it we don’t know but we feel really good about almost all of it. With more practice, we get better.” Ware, South Tech carpentry senior and second-time participant in the competition, saw real value in the challenge stating “This event really improves my blueprint reading skills.”

All participants were awarded generous gift bags with t-shirts, tools, and $20 Quick Trip gift cards from the HBA’s Professional Women in Building Council. Grand prizes which were awarded to the first place winners from Four Rivers Career Center included generous donations from Atlas 46, DeWalt Tools, Home Depot. The St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council also gave each member of the winning team a $500 scholarship.

Our partnership with the HBA introduces students to companies throughout the St. Louis region who are seeking new talent for the residential building industry. They connect our students to employers through guest speaker events, job fairs, tours, and competitions.
